Elias Impressions from the Mani around 1900, mixed media on old invoice notes, 21 x 14.5 cm, framed, 2006-08. Selection from a 50-part tableau, exhibited in the exhibition "Notabene" at Villa Oppenheim 2008-09
"Notations – play, play, play! ... The most difficult question is that of the content, the messages, the readings. For the Central European, the numbers in the leaves are easy to understand, but the Greek terms and names are not. They present riddles. These riddles can be amplified, diminished, emptied, or rendered absurd by additions (I summarize all possibilities under the term 'overdrawings'). Contradictions arise between the layers of imagery; they cannot be resolved. The messages clash so much that no unified message can be conveyed. ..."
The added image elements are intended to respond discursively to the graphic content of the sheets, bringing one into a poetic friction with the other; the content lies between the means.
