Templates for oil paintings

"Painting should be done the same way jazz is made: from the highest knowledge of musical principles and instrument, a structure is invented in space that carries tensions and moods. An expression of life is improvised, encompassing all the nuances of the moment, yet through its inherent logic, it remains a state of permanence. – And why do I enjoy listening to jazz? I am carried by the rhythm (color) and guided by the melody (forms) through a series of states, just like with paintings." – Karl-Heinz Herrfurth in a note dated February 20, 1957

When painting his large-format works, Herrfurth used smaller-format source material, which he had either painted, photographed, or created as collages. The source material is shown on the left, and the oil paintings on canvas are shown on the right. All the oil paintings date from 1969 to 1985. Collage sizes: 31 x 23 cm to 35 x 25 cm (most). Oil painting sizes: 100 x 80 cm to 200 x 160 cm.
